Eyeliner is a powerful cosmetic in controlling the appearance, size and shape of the eye. It could make or break the end result! The down side of eyeliner though is in its application! It can be a right pain to put on and get right to the desired effect!
Eyeliner is available in Liquid and Pencil form, each with their pros and cons and will ultimately be decided by personal preference using trial and error! Liquid Eyeliner will give more accurate and precise lines and do not need sharpening. A pencil will offer a softer look as they can be smudged.
Colour is another important element of getting Eyeliner to look great with your natural eye colour; Brown, Navy and Charcoal will look great with light coloured eyes, while Brown and Plum work best with dark eyes.
The basic principle behind good Eyeliner application is when it is applied in the makeup application routine. Eyeliner is best applied after Eyeshadow and before Mascara. There are various ways to hold and support yourself while applying Eyeliner to make it more comfortable and accurate to apply! Again this is going to be down to personal preference along with trial and error to find the best technique. The two most common techniques are;
For Beginners.
Get your Eyeliner ready in your good hand and support the elbow on a solid surface like a dresser or table; this will help keep the arm steady. Ensure that the chosen spot is well lit (preferable with natural light) and a suitable sized mirror is used. To keep the hand steady while applying a well placed little finger on the cheek will work wonders to combat jittery hands.
For Eyeliner Veterans
While standing in front of a well lit mirror tilt the head slightly back and half close the eyes (just enough so you can still see what is happening) this will allow close application to the eyelash line.
No matter what stance is used for application the application is the same.
Upper Lid
Draw eyeliner from the inner part of the eye to the outer part. Allow the Eyeliner time to dry before fully opening eyes again.
Lower Lid
Apply from the outer edge of eye to the inner part, tapering the line while in motion.
There are many effects that can be achieved with eyeliner that can change the appearance of a face dramatically, along with colours and types. There are small differences in eyeliner application that should be taken into account depending on the setting of the eyes; Deep set eyes, Small eyes, Drooping eyes, and Deep set eyes to name a few. All of these will have small application variances that will make a huge impact on the Eyeliner finish.
